1914: Oil was discovered in Lake of Maracaibo, Venezuela

1925: The Unemployment Insurance Act was passed in England

1960: Leader of the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad, called for a black state

1962: Federation of Malaysia was formed

1965: Cigarette Ads were banned on British TV

1966: Charles Whitman wounded 46 and killed 5 at University of Texas

1973: Delta Airlines DC-9 crashed in fog at Logan Airport, Boston, killing all but one of 89 aboard. The lone survivor died 6 months later

1990: Bosnia-Hercegovina declared its independence

1992: 113 people were killed after a Thai Airbus crashed into a mountain at Kathmandu

2004: The Nigerian state of Kano resumed polio vaccination after an eleven-month ban.

2010: Floods in Pakistan killed over 900 people

2012: United States Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps won a record 19th Olympic medal
