1898: The United States Marines landed in Cuba during the Spanish-American war

1908: The 1st flying club, Aeronautical Society of New York opened

1915: The Girl Scouts Organisation was incorporated

1934: The USSR regained diplomatic relations with Romania

1935: Alcoholics Anonymous was founded

1940: Italy Declared war on France and Britain during World War II

1963: John F. Kennedy signed the equal work, equal pay law for both sexes

1967: The USSR dropped diplomatic relations with Israel

1971: A train crash in Illinois killed 11 people

1979: Pope John Paul II visited Poland

1984: United States missile shot down another incoming missile in space for the 1st time

1988: 31,678 people participated on a bicycle tour

1998: First day in the administration of General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) after the sudden and unexpected death of Sanni Abacha

2005: Ibrahim Agboola Gambari was appointed as the United Nations’ Under Secretary General for Political affairs

2010: Russia announced its plan to sell the Iran S-300 ground to air missiles

2013: German authorities were forced to evacuate 10 villages as a result of heavy rainfall

2015: Juan Felipe Herrera was awarded the title of the year’s national poet laureate by the United States Congress.
