WOMAN RECOUNTS HER ORDEAL ABOUT SPENDING 2 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS IN PRISON AFTER FALLING IN LOVE ONLINE

Sharon Armstrong, a 59 year old woman from New Zealand shared the story of how she got played by the man she fell in love with on a dating site and spent 2 years and 6 months of her life at a Prison in Argentina. She shared the details of the incident at a symposium organised by an Australian University.
According to her, they met online and she fell in love after several months of communicating without having the opportunity to see him. She said, "He talked about our future together. There were daily phone calls, emails, texts and when my computer was later analysed they found more than 7000 emails but nothing visual, there was always an excuse for why he couldn’t Skype”.

The situation took a twist when she was told by her supposed lover to travel all the way to Argentina for a business deal and deliver the documents relating to the contract to him in London. According to her, he also paid for the flight so she had no reason to doubt him. She travelled, picked up the suitcase containing the supposed documents from the agreed destination but was stopped at the Airport for a random inspection by the security on her way to London as she was suspected to have been carrying something strange in her suit case. To her greatest surprise, wraps of cocaine were found neatly hidden in the lining of the suitcase. All her pleas and explanation fell on deaf ears as she was arrested, tried and ended up spending almost 3 years in Prison.
She shared her story for people to learn from and take extra precautions when it comes to online dating.
