1853: 1st United States world's fair opened at Crystal Palace in New York

1927: The 1st commercial airplane flight in Hawaii occurred

1942: Riots against Jews in Amsterdam occurred

1946: Mass murder of Jews in Poland

1948: Israel bombed Cairo, Egypt

1955: 2 people were killed after a lightning struck a racetrack in England

1977: 3 people were killed after North Korea shot down a US helicopter

1986: Bomb attack in Madrid left 10 dead and 60 injured

1994: 27 people were killed after a gas explosion at an adult home in Milan

2011: Neptune completed its first orbit round the sun since the planet was discovered in 1846

2012: Italian and French rescue crews recovered the bodies of two climbers swept away by an avalanche on Mont Blanc in the Alps
