Historical events that took place on the 23rd of July
 

1827: The 1st swim school in the United States was opened

1877: Hawaii’s 1st telephone and telegraph line was completed

1904: The Ice cream cone was created by Charles E. Menches

1930: Earthquake in Italy killed 1,500 people

1967: Race riot in Detroit left 43 people dead and several others injured

1974: The Greek military dictatorship collapsed

1993: 59 people were killed after the British Aerospace 146 crashed at Yinchuan, China

2007: 6 people were killed while several others were trapped in south-west Nigeria after a 3-storey building under construction collapsed

2011: The President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced the country's plan to launch a manned shuttle into space by 2019

2012: America's first woman in space, Sally Ride, died of pancreatic cancer at age 61

2015: Scientists announced the discovery of a planet in the Kepler-452 solar system that is similar to Earth in size and orbit; the planet has a diameter 60% larger than Earth's with an orbit of 385 days which is close to Earth's 365 days
