1944: 170 people were killed in a fire accident at a Circus in Hartford, Connecticut (USA)

1961: 300 people were killed after a Portuguese ship exploded near Mozambique

1964: Malawi declared its independence from the United Kingdom

1966: Malawi became a republic

1967: Nigerian forces invaded as the Biafra War became intense

1975: Comoros announced its independence from France

1983: Supreme Court ruled that women shouldn’t be paid less on retirement

1987: The U.S.S.R. performed a nuclear test

1988: Carlos Salinas Gortari was elected as the president of Mexico

2003: Roger Federer beat Mark Philippoussis at the Wimbledon Men's Finals

2005: London was declared the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games

2010: Linda Lingle, the Former Governor of Hawaii refused a bill to allow same-sex civil unions

2011: Pyeongchang, South Korea was declared the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics
