1864: The Red Cross was formed in Geneva

1914: Montenegro declared war on Germany

1924: Britain and Russia signed a trade agreement

1940: The Battle of Britain began as Germany launched air attacks

1945: U.S.S.R. declared war against Japan in WW II

1945: The United States, U.S.S.R., England and France signed the Treaty of London

1949: Bhutan became an independent monarchy

1956: Fire explosion killed 263 miners at Marcinelle, Belgium

1967: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand met to form the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)

1979: Saddam Hussein, the President of Iraq executed 22 political opponents

1983: A military coup occurred in Guatemala

1988: Angola, Cuba and South Africa signed a cease fire treaty

2008: The Summer Olympics in Beijing, China began
