RESIDENTS OF IBAFO, OGUN STATE LAMENT BITTERLY ABOUT MALTREATMENT RECEIVED FROM THE POLICE IN THE AREA

The residents of Ibafo, Ogun state in Nigeria have begun to express their heartfelt grief about the harsh conditions they are being made to face by the Police.

According to a resident of the area, he said it all started not too long ago after the Ijaw tribe engaged in illicit bunkering that fled Isawo area of Ikorodu to Arepo, Ogun state decided to settle down at the Ebute waterside of Ibafo in Ogun state. About a month ago, news of their relocation got to the Military and officers were sent to the area to try to ward them off but their efforts to do so were futile as they went unprepared for a battle. About a week ago, news got to the residents that a key member of the group was arrested by the Police and this triggered a violent response from members of the group as gun shots went off and are still going off In Ibafo like fire crackers on the 4th of July.

The Police in their bid to take control of the situation blocked major junctions which made vehicle owners resort to following alternative routes and this has been causing major traffic jams especially on work days. As if that isn’t enough, the Policemen in the area are being accused of terrorizing citizens by making them raise their hands while walking on the road and searching residents unnecessarily like suspects, those who fail to comply are usually beaten or made to roll on the floor. The worried resident also claimed that the police have been molesting innocent resident under the covering of trying to control the situation despite knowing the whereabouts of members of the ‘illegal group’. We hope this issue is critically examined and addressed by the appropriate authority.
