THE RECORD HOLDING GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL OPENS TODAY IN SWITZERLAND

 

 

The world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel, Gotthard Base tunnel opened today, the 1^st of June, 2016 in Switzerland. The Rail tunnel runs through the Alps in Switzerland and it is the very first flat low-level route through that region.

            The tunnel construction project was accepted in a 1992 referendum in Switzerland and the construction of the Rail Tunnel lasted for about two decades. The Gotthard Base tunnel which measures a route length of 57 km approximately will provide a link between northern and southern Europe and it is also expected that the tunnel will revolutionise the European freight transport system.

 

 

            Even though the Gotthard Base Rail Tunnel opened today, the 1^st of June, 2016, commercial operations are not expected to commence until December,2016.
