1837: Queen Victoria became the 1st monarch to live in the present Buckingham Palace

1882: Over 40 people were killed after a train derailed near Tcherny, Russia

1908: The 4th modern Olympic Games opened in London

1930: The 1st ever soccer World Cup competition began in Uruguay

1970: The construction of the Amsterdam metro began

1977: New York City experienced a 25 hour black-out

1982: 5 people were killed in a train crash in Belgium

1997: 77 people were killed after an Indonesian ferry sank

2011: Studies by researchers revealed that antiretroviral drugs prescribed to treat AIDS can also prevent HIV infections

2013: Australian authorities rescued 88 people and 9 were feared dead after a boat carrying asylum seekers capsized north of Christmas Island.
