1880: A compressed air accident left 20 workers on the Hudson River tunnel in New York dead

1928: Halina Knonpacka of Poland became the 1st woman to win an Olympic gold medal

1952: 14 people were killed by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Kern County, California

1962: 160 civil right activists were jailed after a demonstration in Georgia

1972: 57 murders occurred in a day In New York

1972: 76 people were killed in Seville, Spain after 2 passenger trains collided head-on
