JULY 7 IN HISTORY


Historical events that took place on the 7th of July
 

1941: 5,000 Jews were executed by Nazis in Kovono, Lithuania

1948: 6 female reservists became the 1st set of women sworn into regular U.S. Navy

1956: Over 1,100 people were killed and thousands of buildings were destroyed after 7 Army trucks loaded with dynamites exploded in middle of Cali, Columbia

1962: A nuclear test was performed by the United States at the Nevada Test Site

1973: 78 drowned after a flood swept a bus into a river in India

1978: Solomon Islands declared its independence from the United Kingdom.

1981: 1st solar-powered aircraft known as the Solar Challenger, crossed the English Channel

1984: A train crash in Williston, Vermont left 5 dead

1993: Guntis Ulmanis was elected as the president of Latvia

1998: Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (M.K.O Abiola) died on the day he was due to be released from incarceration

2005: Transit system bombing in London by terrorists resulted in 56 deaths and 700 injuries

2006: It was declared that 33,000 Nigerian workers in the Civil Service were to be fired at the end of the year. Most of them were deemed to be unfit for their positions.

2010:  Heat waves in the United States and Canada killed 9 people

2015: The World Boxing Organization (WBO) took back Floyd Mayweather's welterweight title belt won after his victory over Manny Pacquiao. This happened after Floyd Mayweather failed to pay a $200,000 fee and vacate his existing titles
