1861: The United States’ Army abolished flogging

1914: Cuba, Uruguay, Mexico and Argentina proclaimed their neutrality in WW I

1923: Henry Sullivan became the 1st American to swim the English Channel

1926: The French and German trade agreement was signed

1949: About 6,000 people died after a 6.75 Earthquake hit Quito, Ecuador

1960: Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) declared its independence from France

1962: Nelson Mandela was arrested for incitement and illegally leaving South Africa

1963: Britain, United States and U.S.S.R. signed nuclear test ban treaty

1972: Ugandan President, Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of 80,000 Asians from the Country

1973: Arab terrorists opened fire at Athens airport killing 3 and wounding 55 others

1997: 29 people survived after Korean Air 747 with 331 aboard crashed in Guam

2011: Yingluck Shinawatra was elected as the 1st female Prime Minister of Thailand

2012: Britain’s tennis pro Andy Murray won the16th gold medal for Britain during the 2012 Summer Olympics after defeating Roger Federer in the men's singles final

2014: Russia countered sanctions by the United States and the European Union by banning all imports of dairy, fish, meat, fruit and vegetables
